Harpviken's top three picks for the award are Sima Samar, a female Afghan human rights advocate with a strong focus on women’s rights and leader of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission, followed by the diaspora-based news agency Democratic Voice of Burma and the Special Court for Sierra Leone.

Ms. Samar was on Harpviken’s top-three list of possible winners last year, as well. He feels she has a stronger chance this year because of the 10-year anniversary of UN Security Resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security.

Samar is not one of the 18 confirmed nominations out of the record 237 candidates – 38 of which are organizations – that have been submitted for this year’s prize. But nominations are normally kept secret unless nominators choose to publicize their choice. One of the confirmed nominations is Liu Xiaobo, a Chinese poet and literary critic who was sentenced last year to 11 years in prison by a Beijing court and an additional two years’ deprivation of political rights for “inciting subversion of state power.”

The “so-called incitement” was a call for political reform and greater human rights in China, said Kvame Anthony Appiah, processor at Princeton University and president of the PEN American Center, in his nomination letter. Mr. Liu has been listed as the top pick for the prize, according to online betting website PaddyPower. He has also received support recently from former Czech President Václav Havel through an open letter in the International Herald Tribune backing Liu’s candidacy.

Separately, Chen Guangcheng and Gao Zhisheng have also been nominated with Liu by a bipartisan group of lawmakers from the US House of Representatives, including Rep. Chris Smith (R) of New Jersey, senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The prize aroused criticism for being awarded just nine months into Mr. Obama's presidential term and while the US was heavily engaged in two military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq. The committee granted him the prize for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

The Social Network review scores have been unparalleled for 2010. In fact, The Social Network review ratings may be the highest for any live action, major studio movie in a long time. Usually, scores in the upper 90s from both Rotten Tomatoes and Meta Critic are reserved for Pixar films, or Oscar-bait independent movies.

However, this is a film that its most passionate fans have already compared to Citizen Kane, at least in structure. Although The Social Network review responses may not hold up at a Kane-like level in 10-20 years, they are extremely high by today's standards.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is up to 98 percent positive, with only three negative reviews out of 148. According to the Rotten Tomatoes charts, this ties it for the third best reviewed film of the year, with How To Train Your Dragon. Toy Story 3 is at second with a 99 percent positive rating, while a foreign film called Henri-George Clouzot's Inferno has 100 percent, but with only 24 reviews. ( see more on the bozyki)

Remembering Author, Producer, and Father Stephen Cannell

The television and literary world lost a master of suspense today with the death of Stephen J. Cannell. The writer and television producer passed away earlier today due to complications from melanoma at the age of 69.

Cannell has had a lasting impact on the world of television through his string of hit television shows dating back to the 1970’s including 21 Jump Street, The A-Team, The Commish, and many more.

In addition to his TV credits, Cannell has authored 16 novels and has recently appeared on the ABC show Castle as one of Castle’s poker buddies.

He is survived by his wife Marcia and their three children – Tawnia, Chelsea and Cody.

“He was surrounded by his family and loved ones,” a statement from the family reads. “Aside from being a legendary television producer and prolific writer, Stephen was also a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a loyal friend. Mr. Cannell is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 46 years, Marcia, their three children, Tawnia, Chelsea and Cody, and three grandchildren. Stephen was the pillar of strength within his family and he touched everyone he met. He will be most deeply missed.”

Ecuador News: Protesting police throw Ecuador into chaos

Hundreds of police protesting a new law that cuts their benefits plunged this small South American nation into chaos on Thursday, shutting down airports and blocking highways in a nationwide strike left citizens and businesses vulnerable to crime.

The rebellious officers fired tear gas and burned tires after taking over barracks in Quito, Guayaquil and other cities. They also set up roadblocks that cutt off highway access to the capital.

Schools shut down in Quito and many businesses closed due to the absence of police protection.

Looting was reported in the capital — where at least two banks were sacked — and in the coastal city Guayaquil. That city’s main newspaper, El Universo, reported assaults on supermarkets and robberies due to the absence of police.

The U.S. Embassy issued a message warning U.S. citizens “of a “nationwide strike by all levels of police, including military police.” It warned them to “stay in their homes or current location, if safe.”

There were no reports of serious violence against the government, but President Rafael Correa was shouted down and pelted with water as he tried to speak with a group of police protesters.

Anita Kustok, a teacher in suburban Chicago, was found dead in her home on Wednesday. She was 58. She is the mother of Comcast SportsNet reporter Sarah Kustok and former Northwestern University quarterback Zak Kustok.

Today, she is being remembered as a special teacher who was adored by her students at Central Elementary School in Riverside. “She is a beautiful person with a beautiful heart,”’ said Dr. Janice Limperis, the school’s principal.

“If anyone had a problem, she would find a positive way to look at it. We are devastated here. Her students are inconsolable. It’s like losing a family member.”

Her death has been ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Police received a call from Palos Community Hospital about 7 a.m. about a woman who was brought to the hospital by a family member and had suffered a gunshot wound to her head. He said she was dead on arrival at the hospital.

Limperis described Kustok as “vivacious” and “outgoing” and said she had been with the school district for seven years. SportsNet released a statement saying, “We are all deeply saddened by this tragic news. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah and her family.”

Chicago-Authorities in suburban Chicago say a teacher whose son is former Northwestern quarterback Zak Kustok and daughter works for Comcast SportsNet was shot to death earlier this week.

The Cook County medical examiner's office said Thursday that the death of Anita Kustok of Orland Park was a homicide. She was pronounced dead Wednesday at Palos Community Hospital from a gunshot wound in the head.

Authorities say the 58-year-old Kustok worked at Central Elementary School in Riverside. Her son led Northwestern to the Big Ten title in 2000. Her daughter, Sarah Kustok, is a Comcast SportsNet reporter.

Police are releasing few details about the case, including where the shooting occurred.

Victim of Secret Dorm Sex Taping Post Facebook Goodbye

A Rutgers University freshman posted a goodbye message on his Facebook page before jumping to his death after his roommate secretly filmed him during a "sexual encounter" in his dorm room and posted it live on the Internet.

Items belonging to 18-year-old Rutgers student Tyler Clementi were found by the George Washington Bridge last week, according to authorities. Clementi's freshman ID card and driver's license were in the wallet.

Clementi's post on his Facebook page, dated Sept. 22 at 8:42 p.m. read, "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry."

Clementi's body has not been recovered, but police have pulled an unidentified male body from the Hudson River just north of the bridge.

Paul Mainardi, the attorney representing the Clementi family, released a statement confirming Clementi's suicide.

Capt. Sig Hansen backs 'Deadliest Catch' duo

Capt. Sig Hansen, star of Discovery's hit reality series "Deadliest Catch," is breaking his silence on the network's lawsuit against two of his co-stars. Not surprisingly, he's backing fellow captains Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand.

"I am very surprised that after all we have been through this past year, Discovery would attack Capt. John and Andy like this," Hansen tells The Hollywood Reporter in a written statement, referring to the death in February of co-star Capt. Phil Harris. "I want people to know the captains stand together and me and my brothers support them 100%."

As THR previously reported, the Hillstrands were sued for $3 million by Discovery for failing to finish work on a spinoff special called "Hillstranded," which was to air this fall. The Hillstrands' lawyer Jeff Cohen then fired back with a statement decrying Discovery's attempt to "extort" his clients.

It's unclear whether the Hillstrand brothers, who have participated in five seasons of the Emmy-winning series, will return to the show. King crab season begins in October, and the plan is for Discovery and producer Original Prods. to resume production as usual.

The Detroit Lions were robbed of a victory Sunday when officials ruled that a late-game catch from Calvin Johnson was not a touchdown due to an obscure rule. Trailing the Bears by five, Johnson reeled in a 25-yard catch to give Detroit the lead with under one minute to go.

While Johnson clearly appeared to have possession of the ball, officials ruled that he did not maintain control long enough. The play was ruled an incompletion, and the Lions were unable to score afterwards.

Artscape Street Closings

Many of the main routes through midtown Baltimore are closed this weekend for the annual Artscape festival, forcing vehicle detours and the rerouting of several bus lines.

The final street closings for the three-day festival, which began as early as last week, went into effect this morning. At 11 a.m. today, the city Department of Transportation was poised to start service on a special Artscape route of the Charm City Circulator, roughly following the perimeter of the sprawling festival. Meanwhile, the north-south Purple Route has been modified so that it turns around at Biddle Street rather than going on to Penn Station

Concordia received an $85,000 grant from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board in the spring that will fund a project to map the preserve and perform other service-learning activities.

Concordia University Texas and Leander ISD faculty and students will soon venture out to map and identify various features of the Concordia Preserve, a nature and wildlife preserve situated on the university’s recently acquired land. The preserve has not been explored extensively in more than a decade.

Siren Festival 2010

The Village Voice has revealed the initial lineup of their annual Coney Island sweat-fest known as the Siren Festival. Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, they've invited Siren alums Matt and Kim and Ted Leo to throw down with them. Also joining the crowded streets, booze, very little clothing, boardwalk food and a rickety old rollercoaster are breakout Floridian rockers Surfer Blood, New York dream-poppers Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Austin garage rock act Harlem.

The day-long, two-stage event will take place on Saturday, July 17 at Coney Island, Brooklyn. Admission is free, and suntan lotion and heightened people watching skills are highly advised. More acts are expected to be announced over the next several
weeks.

Over the years, they've been known for tapping artists before they break into the big time: M.I.A., Death Cab for Cutie, TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House and the Shins all served on Siren's bills before they were gobbled up by everyone. In recent years, they've also nabbed indie rock institutions such as Built to Spill, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Broken Social Scene and Sleater-Kinney.

Bears pick Unga in supplemental draft

The Chicago Bears selected running back Harvey Unga in the seventh round of the supplemental draft. Unga led BYU in career rushing yards, and he led the Mountain West Conference with 1,087 rushing yards in 2009.

With Matt Forte and Chester Taylor penciled in atop the Bears' depth chart at running back, Unga is expected to compete with Garrett Wolfe, Khalil Bell and rookie free agent Brandon Minor for a backup spot on the roster. The Bears currently have two fullbacks under contract: Eddie Williams and Will Ta'ufo'ou, after releasing veteran Jason McKie earlier in the offseason. On April 16, 2010, Unga voluntarily withdrew from BYU after violating BYU’s honor code, as he had sexual relations with his former fiancee and BYU women’s basketball player, Keilani Moeaki, whom he was dating. At the time of their withdrawal, Keilani was 6 months pregnant and wouldn’t have been able to hide their indescretion much longer.

Recently, Harvey and his girlfriend became parents of a baby boy on July 4.

Michelle Beadle Is Ready For The ESPYs

But are you? is the real question. Actually, you don't have much choice. There's no real sports. The only TV tonight is scripted garbage, full of hackneyed jokes backed by forced laughter. Or, you could watch sitcoms. Ba-dum-tsh!

Seth Meyers is the head writer for one of the unfunnier SNL eras, and can't even get into any sketches. This makes him overqualified to host tonight's awards. As Drew writes elsewhere,

I assume he'll be on hand to make jokes about LeBron James a week after everyone else has already made them all. Say, it's just like his work on "Weekend Update"! Seriously though, someone needs to explain Seth Meyers' success to me. At least little girls think Jimmy Fallon is cute. I almost understand his appeal. But with Meyers, it's like someone found a guy working at an accounting firm and said, "You! You seem mildly snarky! How would you like to be head writer of SNL?" And off he went.

I think it will be slightly less painful to watch than seeing Pete Carroll try to distance himself from USC on tonight's HBO Real Sports.

Chupacabras killed in Texas

The legendary goat sucker, or Chupacabra, has been popping up in Texas. A Hood County Texan named Dave Hewitt killed one and said he'd never seen anything like it. He's not the first Texan to have a dead chupacabra on his hands.

ABC news quotes Hewitt, "From a distance, he looked like a hairless chihuahua, only much bigger," Hewitt said. "From all indications, it seemed to be a chupacabra. The claws, toenails, nothing like I've seen on a coyote. Skinny, pointed tail; sure looks like a possum to me," he said. "Never seen any kind of animal that doesn't have hair on it."

In 2007, Texan Philis Canion found one and saved it's head as a trophy. According to LAist, she sold t-shirts that proclaimed, "The Summer of the Chupacabra, Cuero, Texas."

In response to the recent sightings, Chris Zedler of Texoma says the animals are just Xoloitzcuintli or Xolos. It's a standard breed of dog known as the Mexican hairless. Zedler's guess is that someone released them into the wild and they became feral. KTEN says, "Zedler says he shot a dog. "They showed a picture of a dead one and I was like oh my god that's a Mexican Hairless, that's my dog! Zedler says she doesn't pay much attention to the legends, but even if they were true she doesn't understand why anyone would want to kill the creature. "If you saw Bigfoot, would you shoot him. I mean why are you shooting big foot if you actually found one." And, while her dog, Xoxo, may not be any "Bigfoot," Zedler isn't taking any chances. she says she is dressing her dog in clothes so people will know it's a pet."

Go Pets America has facts on Xolos, "The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced sholo-its-quintli) meaning "dog of the god Xolotl" , the Aztec god of twins, of things which are deformed, and of the Aztec ball-court game. It has also been called the Pelon, or Bald Dog. Breeders usually refer to it simply as the Xolo (pronounced sholo). Its primary function in the ancient times was as a source of food.

Unlike goat suckling Chupacabras, the Xolos are known as good watchdogs that behave well around children and family pets.

A Texan recently killed an animal that he believes is the legendary Chupacabra or Mexican goat sucker. Others say it's a hairless breed of dog named the Xoloitzcuintli called Xolos for short. Some say the Chupacabra is the south American Bigfoot - a hoax for bedtime stories. Is the Chupacabra just a Xolo, or is there still a monster out there?

Nominees for Best Male Athlete include Kobe Bryant, Drew Brees, LeBron James, Jimmie Johnson and Albert Pujois. James recently announced he is signing with the Miami Heat after staging an elaborate decision-making showdown. Bryant helped the Los Angeles Lakers win a national championship.

Best Female Athlete nominees are Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi, Lindsey Vonn and Serena Williams. Williams just won Wimbledon and is ranked No. 1 in the world in tennis. Vonn became the first American woman to win the downhill in the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Other nominees include Shaun White, who won gold snowboarding in Vancouver, swimmer Michael Phelps, Roger Federer, Canadian figure skater Joanie Rochette, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning.

The Blind Side is nominated for Best Sports Movie. Isner vs. Mahut is nominated for the Best Record-Breaking Performance for longest professional tennis match in history.

The Arkansas Razorbacks' SEC rival, the Alabama Crimson Tide, are nominated for Best Team.

The 2010 ESPY Awards are only hours away. The ESPYs air at 9:00 PM ET on ESPN, live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Scroll down to see some of the awards and nominees. Which are you looking forward to most?

The nominees for Best Male Athlete are Drew Brees, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Jimmie Johnson, and Albert Pujols.

Brees led the New Orleans Saints to a Super Bowl this year and is the reigning Super Bowl MVP. He also led the league in quarterback rating (109.6), percentage of throws completed (70.6%), and touchdowns (34).

Kobe Bryant was 4th in the league in scoring per game (27.0). He led the Los Angeles Lakers to a championship after being down in the Finals to their challengers, the Boston Celtics, 3-2.

LeBron James is the two-time reigning MVP in the NBA. He was 2nd in the league for scoring per game (29.7). On top of that, he averaged 7.3 rebounds per game and 8.6 assists per game. His led the league in points+rebounds+assists per game by around five whole points at 45.6. He was a major reason the Cleveland Cavaliers had the best record in the NBA.

Jimmie Johnson won another Cup Series championship -- his fourth consecutive one. He had seven wins, sixteen top-5 finishes, and twenty-four top-ten finishes. He won the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year this past year. It's the first time ever done so by a race car driver.

Albert Pujols is the reigning NL MVP. He led the league in home runs (47). He was 2nd in the league in on-base percentage (.443). He was 3rd in walks (115) and runs batted in (135). He also hit .327.

Sony says YouTube 3D coming within a Year

This past week Mick Hocking, a studio exec for Sony, was telling the media about Sony Playstation’s future gaming options to include 3D gaming. During his releases, he noted, “YouTube will be supporting 3D content over the next 12 months as well – and you’ll be able to watch that on the PlayStation 3. And as you start taking 3D pictures of your family or 3D camcorder movies, you can play those back on PS3, too.”

The use of 3D content will require special hardware so those with PS3s will not be able to simply play the content as it stands now. For watching the 3D content on YouTube it will take a 3D display as well as a HDMI 1.4 compatible video card, and of course a TV or operating system that will be able to display the 3D content.

Sony is partnered with Google and GoogleTV. In 2010 Sony will be releasing their own content through GoogleTV, and it is expected to release 3D content as well. Sony has been working hard to stay ahead of the pack with 3D technology, and the latest information given by Mick Hocking shows that the work will be paying off with advanced capabilities available for the companies popular entertainment and gaming system.

BofA to roll out online account with fee

Bank of America Corp plans to offer an online bank account that charges an $8.95 monthly fee for paper statements and using tellers, as it looks for ways to make up for income lost because of new regulations.

As part of the new account targeted at primarily online users, Bank of America customers would be steered toward using automated teller machines and online banking for basic services like making deposits and withdrawals that would be free to use with the account.

New U.S. banking rules implemented July 1 cap overdraft fees, among others, spurring some analysts to speculate that free checking accounts may be doomed to extinction.

For two decades banks have offered free checking accounts, and charged high fees for overdrafts to help cover administrative costs.

Banks may now instead follow Bank of America's lead and try to make checking accounts cheaper to administer, instead of doing away with free checking altogether, analysts said.

"This is a smarter way, maybe a more thoughtful way, than what I think a lot were predicting," said Jefferson Harralson, an analyst at investment bank Keefe, Bruyette and Woods Inc.

A Bank of America spokeswoman said customers would still be able to consult with tellers on banking questions without being charged, and the company is introducing the account nationally to respond to changing consumer banking preferences.

Bank of America's ebanking account is currently in a pilot phase in Georgia, initiated in November 2009. It will be introduced nationwide in August.

Consumer banking chief Joe Price and other Bank of America senior executives have previously said the company is examining its options to replace fee income lost due to new regulations.

Wells Fargo & Co eliminated free checking for new bank customers on July 1, introducing a $5 monthly fee on its most basic account.

That fee would be waived, if a Wells Fargo customer met certain account requirements, such as keeping a high enough minimum balance.

Bank of America shares closed at $15.67 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Rod Carew (Rodney Cline)

Rodney Cline "Rod" Carew (born October 1, 1945) is a former Major League Baseball player. A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, he is renowned for his hitting prowess. Carew played for the Minnesota Twins and the former California Angels from 1967 to 1985. He threw right-handed and batted left-handed.

Carew is a Zonian and was born to a Panamanian mother on a train in the town of Gatún, which, at that time, was in the Panama Canal Zone. The train was racially segregated; white passengers were given the better forward cars, while non-whites, like Carew's mother, were forced to ride in the rearward cars. When she went into labor, a physician traveling on the train, Dr. Rodney Cline, delivered the baby, who was named Rodney Cline Carew in appreciation.[1]

When Carew was age 14, he and his family emigrated to the United States. He lived in the Washington Heights section of the borough of Manhattan, New York City. Although Carew attended George Washington High School, which current MLB star left fielder Manny Ramirez also attended, he never played baseball for the high school team. Instead, Carew played sandlot (semi-pro) baseball for the Bronx Cavaliers, which is where he was discovered by Minnesota Twins' scout, Monroe Katz (whose son, Steve, played with Carew on the Cavaliers). Katz recommended Carew to another Twins' scout, Herb Stein, and soon Carew was signed to an amateur free agent contract with the Minnesota Twins a day after graduating (at the Stella D'Oro Restaurant in the Bronx).[2][3] Three years later, he was called up and became a teammate of first baseman Harmon Killebrew. In Panama, the National Baseball Stadium is named after him.

In Australia, Stonefish stings are a lot more common as the fish lives coastal areas of the Indian and Pacific oceans. It blends in well with coral and rocks making it hard to see to casual passers.

It is also an unusual fish because it can live out of the water for up to 24 hours making just as lethal when on land. Those who get stung by the venomous fish are usually treated with anti-venom and heat treatments. By heating up the infected area, it can kill the venom, but anti-venom works as well.

Atacama Desert A Hit For Gamers While Chile Rocked With Earthquake

The Atacama Desert has been in the news the past couple of months because the desert in Chile was one of the maps released in an update for the Battlefield Bad Company 2 game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. On Tuesday, however, the desert was making headlines for a different reason.

An earthquake that measured 6.1 hit the Atacama Desert in Chile and Tarapaca, Antofagasta at around 8PM. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at the Atacama Desert, and family members were being contacted from around the world.

While the news may have devastating details coming out in the future, online gamers have been busy trying to play through the Onslaught Mode for Battlefield Bad Company 2. The Atacama Desert is just one of four levels that were released for the PlayStation and Xbox 360 platforms earlier this month.

Of all of the new levels, gamers have been particularly shocked at the Rush on Atacama Desert level. Players have commented on various gaming sites of how it is tough to even make past the first base attack. Others have defended their bases on the game, but have had difficulty doing so.

With online play now available for both gaming consoles, the ability of gamers to play against their friends without leaving their own homes has caused a sharp increase in action. many of the gamers have put together leagues and challenges in which actual gambling is involved.

It has not been the intention of either PlayStation or Xbox to promote gambling, but with the action and sports games that are available, players have created that aspect of the games themselves. Al Harrington may be Mavericks mid-level exception

Reports have begun showing that Al Harrington may be the Mavericks mid-level exception. Free agent, Al Harrington played with the struggling Knicks the past couple seasons, and didn’t get to see much playing time. When he was in the game, the NBA player did get to play he put 17.7 points per game in only 30 minutes of play.

Harrington started 51 times for the Knicks in the past season and put in over 20 points in each game. The star, who was drafted in 1998 right out of high school, was initially with the Indiana Pacers, but didn’t get to play much at all. With the latest trade that might go through, Harrington would be playing for his fifth team if the Mavericks do take the veteran aboard.

His career stats show that Harrington is consistent, and matches up well with his opponents. The 6 foot 9 inch player takes an offensive force to the court whenever he plays so the Mavericks may indeed be picking him up.

Last week, I wrote my take on the Jezebel/Daily Show showdown over at BlogHer. This morning, the New York Times posted a story about Jezebel titled, “The Blog Jezebel is Not Afraid to Pick a Fight,” though the irony in the cries of sexism in the hiring practices of the Daily Show is reflected in the Jezebel newsroom photos. The first shows Jessica Coen standing in front of several male employees on computers. The second one shows the mostly male staff of Jezebel at work (helpfully labeled by Josh):

Where are the women of Jezebel? Why are we mostly seeing men in the pictures? Is Jezebel engaging in…gasp…sexist hiring practices at a WOMEN’S WEB SITE?

But the fact is that just as you can’t get the whole story of what is happening at the Daily Show simply by speaking to ex-employees and a few people who haven’t been hired by the show, you can’t know how many women or how many men or how important any individual’s job is to the whole of the product simply by examining the tiny sliver of reality contained in a photograph. No, I don’t believe that Jezebel engages in sexist hiring practices any more than I believe the Daily Show has it out for women.

But I do think it’s a series of interesting photos considering the accusations of the blog.

Jesse Jackson Defends LeBron James

Stop the presses: Jesse Jackson has come to the defense of LeBron James. Mind you, no one asked him to, no one cares what he says, and some of his word choice was predictably ridiculous - but he defended the NBA star, alright!

Naturally, he compared bitter Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, whose open letter to fans tore into James after he bolted the city, to a "slave master."

In a harshly-worded statement, the civil rights leader took Gilbert to task for his comments regarding LeBron's decision last week to sign with the Miami Heat.

Jackson says, "He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality."

"He sees LeBron as a runaway slave."

Jesse goes on, "LeBron is not a child, nor is he bound to play on Gilbert’s plantation and be demeaned. He has been a model citizen and has inspired the children of Akron, Cleveland, the State of Ohio and the United States."

Okay, look.

No one is arguing James was bound to play for Cleveland and no one else, but it's crystal clear why no sports fan outside South Florida likes him right now.

The egotistical superstar didn't simply abandon his hometown, he strung it along, then delivered the news in an absurd, staged primetime special on ESPN.

Then he was introduced as a member of the Heat in a similarly bombastic, over-the-top event in Miami the next night, cementing his me-first villain status.

App Inventor for Android

Google just released App Inventor for Android, a web based application builder that will help aspiring young developers create Android applications with just few drags and drops and no need to learn Java or type one line of code. There are plenty of tutorials and samples to help set up your system and start building the first app. Google also set up a Google Group to share experiences or get help. The builder is web-based but it requires an Android phone connected by USB to your Windows or Mac computer.

This is a great tool for education and this is what Google wants this to be used for. There is a form to fill out to get access where you are asked to mention your school or affiliation, as well as other information. It would seem that the App Inventor team will review and approve applications; access is not open yet.

I find it strange that early posts about App Inventor (Gizmodo, TechCrunch) seem a little worried that it will pollute the Android Market. First, after reading all the tutorials and help, I could not see anywhere mentioned that you can publish created apps in the Android Market, and there is nothing about linking the tool to an Android developer account. App Inventor would be primarily used in classrooms to spark interest in software development. Young app developers will be able to create, test and share apps with the class or school. A great idea that will help to nurture the talented Android developers of tomorrow.

Angie Harmon in Rizzoli & Isles, New TNT Detective-Drama - We will see Angie Harmon again on the screen. She is playing in a new TNT detective-drama show, Rizzoli & Isles.

This new crime show sets in Boston, features Angie Harmon as detective Jane Rizzoli and Sasha Alexander as Maura Isles, a smart medical examiner. The centerpiece of the show is the close friendship and working relationship between these two women.

This series is not far from the other shows played by Angie Harmon. A female detective and a medical examiner characters, Harmon seems to be gravitated towards the same roles.

Both Harmon and Alexander have great experience in crime-show serials ("Law & Order" and "NCIS"). So let's hope Rizzoli & Isles had a good writing to, at least, appeals the viewers of the very popular "The Closer".

Walter Hawkins, famed gospel singer, dead at 61

Grammy Award-winning gospel singer, composer, and pastor, Walter Hawkins died Sunday at his home in Ripon, California after losing a battle with cancer. He was 61.

According to his older brother, Edwin Hawkins, Walter fought an arduous battle with pancreatic cancer. “Today, I lost my brother, my pastor, and my best friend… Bishop Hawkins suffered bravely but now he will suffer no more and will be greatly missed,” he said.

The gospel singer was born in Oakland, California and obtained his divinity degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

In 1972 he recorded his first album ‘Do Your Best.’

In 1973, he became a pastor and founded the Love Center Church in Oakland.

The Mercury News reports that Bill Carpenter, a friend and family representative said that Hawkins garnered nine Grammy nominations after recording a series of albums. Hawkins' ‘The Lord’s Prayer,’ won him a Grammy in 1980.

Hawkins was once married to gospel great Tramaine Hawkins, but the union ended in divorce.

Hawkins is survived by two children, Trystan Hawkins and Walter “Jamie” Hawkins Jr., an R&B singer; a daughter-in-law, gospel singer Myiia “Sunny” Hawkins; two grandchildren, Jamie-Daniel and Jahve; and his siblings, Carol, Feddie, Edwin, Daniel, and Lynette.

Scientists have captured the world's first images of a baby coelacanth - an extremely rare type of fish known as a 'living fossil'.

Japanese marine researchers have found and successfully filmed the young fish at a depth of 528ft in Manado Bay off Sulawesi Island, Indonesia.

Video footage shows the 12.6-inch coelacanth, coloured blue with white spots, swimming slowly among rocks on the seabed for about 20 minutes.

As far as we know, it was the first ever video image of a living juvenile coelacanth, which is still shrouded in mystery,' said Masamitsu Iwata, a researcher at Aquamarine Fukushima in Iwaki, northeast of Tokyo.
Scientists hope the discovery will shed light on the habitat and breeding habits of coelacanths.

The researchers used a remotely operated, self-propelled vehicle to film the coelacanth, which appeared to be newly born, Iwata said.

A similar-sized juvenile was once discovered in the belly of a pregnant coelacanth. It is believed that their eggs hatch inside the female and the young fish are fully formed at the time of birth.

Coelacanths are commonly regarded as having evolved little from prehistoric times and were thought to be extinct until a living specimen was discovered in 1938 off the coast of southern Africa.

Laura Castro, 14, was born normal but developed pure white eyes at the age of 10. The Miami, Fla., child has been studied by eye doctors and other experts, but none can explain what causes her rare condition.

“The doctors say they’re never seen anything like this,” said the child’s mother, divorcee Anabel Castro. “My daughter can see anywhere in daylight or in darkness, and she can easily see through solid objects. The doctors say she may have been hit on the head or exposed to chemicals or something.

“All I know is that this came on gradually and that as her brown eyes got lighter and lighter her vision got stronger and stronger.”

An April 23 complaint accuses Sypher, a 49-year-old former model and saleswoman, of demanding that Pitino pay off her mortgage, finance her children's college educations, purchase two cars of her choice and give her $3,000 cash per month.

She faces up to two years in prison if convicted on charges that another person made calls to Pitino in February at her behest, threatening to publicize allegations of “a criminal nature” against him. She faces another five years if convicted of lying to the FBI by allegedly saying she did not know who called Pitino for her.

Sypher's longtime friend Lester Goetzinger, 49, was charged on June 24 with aiding and abetting Sypher by making threats to Pitino during three phone calls. Prosecutors have agreed to drop those charges if Goetzinger completes a pretrial diversion program and testifies against Sypher.

Her allegations against Pitino stem from a 2003 incident. The Courier-Journal has not published the allegations because they could not be corroborated. Commonwealth's Attorney Dave Stengel has said that Sypher's allegations against Pitino are “void of credibility” and lack “any supporting evidence.”

Stengel's office decided to take no action after reviewing a videotaped complaint Sypher made recently to the sex offenses unit of the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Dead Ringer for Jacko

The Pharaoh of Pop doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as King of Pop, but visitors to Chicago’s Field Museum could swear that’s Jacko’s face on a 3,000-year-old Egyptian bust.

The spitting image limestone sculpture has been on display at the museum since 1988, but recently started drawing attention because of its likeness to Jacko --- complete with disfigured nose.

Unfortunately the bust, which was carved sometime between 1550 B.C. and 1050 B.C., is of a woman and MJ likely never had the chance to see the statuette.

“I have no idea whether Jackson ever visited the museum,” a Field spokesperson said to the Sun-Times' Michael Sneed. “But the similarity between the limestone statue of a woman – which is about 3,000 years old --- and Jackson is astounding.”

Interestingly, Jackson cast himself as an interloper in ancient Egypt in his video for “Remember the Time,” so maybe he sensed some Egyptian roots.

Domed cities have been a staple of science fiction for almost since there has been science fiction. A recent episode of the Discovery Channel's Mega Engineering show imagines what it would take to build a dome over the modern city of Houston.
Domed cities have usually been imagined to have been built on some other world, like the Moon or Mars, or on a post Apocalypse Earth. However some people have dreamed of putting a dome over Houston for decades. Houston: The First Domed City?
Houston during the summer, when 90 plus degree heat and tropical humidity combine to make an outdoor environment that is, politely stated, character building would demonstrate why.
The prose in the program is just a little purple about hurricanes and environmental horrors brought on by too much green house gasses caused by too much air conditioning. Throwing up a dome over downtown Houston may have its virtues. But Galveston, closer to the coast and far more susceptible to hurricane damage, might be more deserving of a hurricane proof dome first. And expanding nuclear power might alleviate some of the greenhouse gasses, though most of Houston's power comes from natural gas, with wind mills coming on as a major new source of energy. The plan does not address any pollution caused by the petrochemical and oil refining facilities that dot the landscape around Houston.

With technology fast on the move and with our earth's natural growing demands and changes, the concept of Monolithic and Geodesic Domes replacing our traditional box-like homes is becoming widely accepted.We can thank R.Buckminster Fuller - one of our world's first global thinkers and futurists - for having introduced his scientific concept on domes. The advantages of having a "Home-Dome" are numerous.
Monolithic Dome
This type of dome is a permanent structure. It is energy efficient - saving up to fifty percent or more on heating and cooling costs when compared to a conventional building. Monolithic domes are also disaster resistant, cost effective and attractive. They are built for strength endurance and can withstand the force of a tornado, hurricane or earthquake. The term "Monolithic" means "one piece". In other words, the completed structure is literally a "one-piece design". They are a "thin shell" concrete structure, which is basically defined as a structure that is made using single or compound curves. The variety of materials used to create the "thin-shell" method includes - but is not limited to - metal, wood, concrete, brick, et cetera.
In general, the monolithic dome is built using structural materials such as foam and concrete and then applied in such a manner where these materials act as a single component. They are constructed by inflating a large vinyl airform in the shape of a dome, and then spraying the inside with three inches of foam insulation. Once done, then steel rebar is attached to the foam and three inches of concrete is sprayed inside.

Can a Geodesic Dome Save the City of Houston?

Recently the Discovery Channel aired an episode of Mega Engineering that mentioned constructing a geodesic dome over the city of Houston. Could this Houston dome really be the fourth most populated US city's only hope, as some environmental experts urge? As a resident of Houston, I have to admit that I am skeptical of the Houston dome project for a few reasons.
The dome must contain a clear material that can fill in all the holes in the frame, act as windows, and be able to withstand very high winds and other forces of nature. However, for a structure large enough to cover even just Downtown Houston, the material would need to be lightweight, but durable at the same time. According to clips shown on the Mega Engineering episode, a material called Texlon ETFE can make that possible, as well as protect the Houston dome from winds of up to 180 MPH.
That wind speed is faster than even the most forceful winds of the strongest category 5 hurricane. This brings experts to the conclusion that in combination with the specially-designed steel structure, the Houston Dome project could be successful. True, there will be air conditioning (and boy does Houston need that during the summer), but what about growing plant life? How well will it do under the dome?
What if people in Houston want to actually feel the rain or the sun - you know, the way it feels naturally. What about feeling the warm Houston breeze on my face or picking flowers in a field (or the backyard)?

Trend Micro has detected a new IM-based worm, WORM_OPANKI.Y, which uses the file name ITUNES.EXE for its routines. The worm spreads via AOL Instant Messenger, one of the top three IM applications in the world, and exploits the popularity of the iTunes application for music downloads.

OPANKI.Y sends the message ?this picture never gets old? to all online contacts of the affected user. The message it sends contains a link to a downloadable file which contains a JPG extension to appear credible. However, the downloaded file is instead saved as ITUNES.EXE in the user’s system.

The Impact

In addition to backdoor capabilities, OPANKI.Y drops the following four known adware/greyware applications:

ADW_DYFUCA.EI: This adware creates a folder, “Internet Optimizer” and drops another spyware application, which displays pop-up advertisements on the affected system.

ADW_MEDTICKS.A: This is a popular adware program ?Media Tickets? (www.mediatickets.net). It has the ability to track what the user clicks on ? and how often they do it ? and can display pop-up ads. This adware also promises to pay 15 cents (USD) for every time a user clicks on the adware. This adware was also dropped in a number of variants of the popular MYTOB family of worms over the past few months. ADW_SOLU180.H: This adware is a well-known greyware application, “180 Search Assistant”. This application monitors an affected user’s Internet Explorer activities and transmits logs of every site visited, to profile Web users and trigger pop-up ads that target the user’s surfing habits.

ADW_SOLU180.K: This adware is commonly packaged with other adware programs, as seems to be the case here.

Threats that spread via IM applications are not new; the earliest known worm to do so was WORM_MENGER.A, which dates back to May 2001. Most of these IM-based threats use one of the big three IM vendors ? AIM, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger ? primarily due to their widespread adoption. And with IM usage on the rise, it has become a popular medium for virus authors, containing millions of potential victims, most of whom are unaware of virus and malware threats.

Jaime Lyndon “Jamz” A. Yaneza, Senior AV Research Engineer with antivirus and content security firm Trend Micro, believes that social engineering techniques like this can be particularly effective. ?With the popularity of the iPod and iTunes, it?s relatively easy for a user to mistake the file name ITUNES.EXE for the legitimate application,? says Yaneza. ?Effective social engineering relies on grabbing people?s attention. Appealing to people?s interests is a time-proven technique.?

To safeguard against this threat, security experts advise users to double-check AIM messages they receive ? even when messages appear to be from a friend or other known source.

The small house movement is going buck wild. Some say it's because of a concern for the environment. Others say it's because of the economy. We could all say it's a confluence of both the economy and the environment, but what's important is that people actually rethink what a home can be -- including how big it needs to be.
